US and Britain Joined Hands for Safety of AI Models Through Collaborative Testing
Washington, the US, and Britain officially announced on Monday (1st April 2024) their new partnership on the science of Artificial Intelligence safety, among the growing concerns about the upcoming next-generation versions of AI.
Agreement on the Advancement and Safety of AI:
US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and British Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan signed an agreement of understanding in Washington to cooperatively develop AI model testing, following the commitments announced at an AI Safety Summit in Bletchley Park in November 2023.
Under this partnership, the US and Britain are planning to perform at least one joint testing exercise on the AI model that is publicly accessible, and they are also considering exploring personnel exchanges between the institutes.
Official Statement about the Safety of AI:
Michelle Donelan said, “This is the first agreement of its kind anywhere in the world, AI is already an extraordinary force for good in our society, and has vast potential to tackle some of the world’s biggest challenges, but only if we are able to grip those risks.”
In an interview with Reuters on Monday, Raimondo and Donelan said urgent joint action is needed to address AI risks.
Michelle Donelan said,”Time is of the essence because the next set of models are about to be released, which will be much, much more capable, We have a focus one the areas that we are dividing and conquering and really specializing.”
Britain’s Investment to Enhance the Safety of AI:
In February 2024, Britain announced it would invest over 100 million pounds ($125.5 million) to establish nine new research centers and educate directors on artificial intelligence.
Both nations intend to exchange essential data on the risks and potential benefits of AI models and systems and technical research on AI security and safety.
With its ability to produce text, images, and videos in response to open-ended cues, generative AI has sparked both enthusiasm and concerns that it would eventually replace human labor in some occupations, disrupt elections, and have disastrous consequences.
US Initiatives on it:
Raimondo said she will raise the AI issues at a meeting of the U.S.-EU Trade and Technology Council in Belgium on Thursday.
The Biden administration plans to announce additions to its AI team soon. Raimondo said,” We are pulling in the complete resources of the U.S. government.”
Biden signed an executive order to lessen the hazards associated with AI in October 2023. The Commerce Department announced in January 2024 that it would like to make American cloud providers check if foreign organizations are using American data centres to train artificial intelligence (AI) models.
Raimondo said she was especially concerned about the threat of AI applied to bioterrorism or a nuclear war simulation. She said, ”Those are the things where the consequences could be catastrophic, and so we really have to have zero tolerance for some of these models being used for that capability.”
How does this Collaboration Benefit the Future of AI?
As experts from both nations predict a cooperative effort as the cooperation becomes more robust, it will reduce risks and fully utilize AI’s potential for good. For more understanding of the security and safety of AI, the US and Britain are conducting testing exercises and personnel exchanges are considered essential stages.
The necessity of international cooperation in the regulation and management of AI technologies has come to light more and more in recent years. This alliance between the US and Britain establishes a standard for international cooperation in tackling the issues raised by the development of AI capabilities.
Conclusion:
As time passes, it becomes clearer that specialized fields like bioterrorism and nuclear war simulation highlight the dynamic nature of AI concerns. That’s why the US and Britain joined hands to pay attention to details essential to prevent misuse and guarantee that it is responsibly advanced and used for the benefit of society as AI technology develops.
